Not sure whether to put this here or elsewhere because of the subject matter but..
On the discord server there was some discussion among users about the RSA SecurID device that has a key generation feature (that many of us use daily). The topic at issue was patents.
Does anybody here have information about patents and how exactly they work? For instance, if you have an idea for a key fob like the one used by RSA: SecurID - what does it entail to patent the idea and tech? How do you avoid conflicting patents like the ones made at YubiKey, and Verisign, etc.?
It seems weird that there are thousands of these patents around for key-based auth tokens and device-to-device authentication. How do they not violate one another? How can so many broad licenses for this exist, and yet, not a single one infringes the other?
I figured that bringing this here would be a change of pace and maybe encourage some discussion on the authentication tech along the way.
