So I ordered 2 pairs of shoes and 2 cheap items and planned to do a partial refund, however, I told the dpd driver to leave at my safe place and he did, no signature.

Would it be smarter to say there was nothing at the safe space? I did tick the “it’s my responsibility” box but that’s mandatory.

The responsibility thing might make it difficult for you. It could potentially be successful though. Maybe you could combine the two and say that the box wasn't sealed well and some items are missing. Which could mean they either forgot to put it in the box at the warehouse, or someone stole them. It's hard to say for certain what happened and if they don't have a good answer for what might've happened they could give you a refund.
