Marco Rubio Announces New Digital U.S. Passport System for 2027
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans to modernize the U.S. passport system, with the State Department aiming to allow the vast majority of Americans to apply for a passport or passport card online through America.gov by the end of 2027.

The new system is intended to make the passport process much more digital. Instead of relying as heavily on paper forms and traditional processing, applicants would be able to complete more of the process online and receive updates about their application, including information about its expected delivery.
The State Department is also working on digital identity verification technology that would work alongside the physical passport. The goal is to make it easier for Americans to prove their identity digitally while still maintaining the physical passport as the primary travel document.
Rubio has also discussed a future redesign of the physical U.S. passport. That redesign is currently expected around 2028 and is separate from the online passport system being developed for 2027.
The changes could represent one of the biggest modernization efforts for the U.S. passport system in decades.
Would you actually use a fully online passport application system?
I feel like being able to handle most of the process from your phone or computer would make getting a passport way less annoying, especially if you could track everything and see exactly when it is expected to arrive.
