My humble introduction #1
Hey everyone

I am a C# programmer, as well as an aspiring hacker. I'd like to think I'm good at C#, and I'm also working with objective C at work, however I also want to learn about hacking, because we all know you can never know too much about security.
Regardless, so far I have been unsuccessful with my different attempts. I've attempted to crack a WEP wifi on my desktop, from my laptop (desktop with Windows 7, laptop with BT V5 R3), unsuccessful. I have also tried following some tutorials on hacking through Windows 7, again unsuccessful.
Whether that being due to my hardware in my laptop, or my own limited knowledge in the arts of hacking, I do not know, but I am guessing on the later. Which is why I'm writing this introduction, so I can also ask at the same time if someone has some good pointers as where to start exactly.
I have read the thread about white, gray, black hats and the different aspects of hacking, so I'd like to think I'm good to go, in regards to getting started learning.

Like I said, I'm mainly a C# programmer, so I also know (I'd like to believe) a lot about programming languages and how they work. And yes, I realize coding hacking tools is mainly done in C++, and I am also ready to learn that.
But for the time being I am mainly interested in learning about hacking Windows computers, and how that works exactly. And if its not too difficult, cracking Wifi passwords at the same time. But who knows, later on I might also learn some web penetration.
So... Any pointers as to where to start? Smile
Of course if anyone thinks there is a different place I should start, rather than Windows hacking, I'd be very interested in knowing ^^

A nice detailed introduction, welcome to the community. Tools are written in a variety of languages so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hacking windows machines is a big subject and there are many ways to achieve this, RAT's, metasploit, etc there are lots of threads on each of these have a look around the hacking tutorial section.

As for for your WiFi troubles before I can offer any help I will need more details from you. How have you installed backtrack? is it duel boot, live CD/USB or running from a VM? also what hardware are you using as some are not supported within the aircrack suite have a look *here* to check
If you need help feel free to PM me

The laptop I got is Toshiba Satellite L350, and I got installed Backtrack 5 R3 using the unetbooting and Default, which I believe is Live USB...
Also I should probably mention I made the wifi as an Ad-Hoc with WEP encryption. That also qualifies as a wifi that can be hacked onto, using the general airmon-ng way, right? xP

You are correct which leads me to believe that hardware is the issue follow the link in my previous post and find your card, it may be just a case of installing the correct drivers, which should be listed next to your card. Failing that if you wish to pursue wifi attacks you might want to consider a usb card which can be found quite cheap on ebay just check compatibility before you buy

So... I wanted to PM, but it requires a minimum of 5 posts... xP So I'm just gonna ask here, hoping you'll reply.
It is an Atheros network card, and I'm on Linux, so if the list is correct, it should support aircrack and the related tools.
If it's not too much trouble, could you link me to the best tutorial on WEP wifi cracking you know? :/ Cause tbh, I'm not entirely sure if the tutorial I was following is exactly correct...

Also, quick question. Trying to crack an Ad-Hoc wifi is the same process as an actual wifi from a router, right? xP

Thanks
