Being that I am a prepper, survivalist and I do bushcraft being able to sharpen in the field is important, so below are the items that I use which will get your cutting tools back to a working edge. A dull blade is unacceptable and can be dangerous so if you go out in the field with a dull blade and fuck up and slip nicking an artery its all on you.
Work Sharp Field Sharpener:
I use this to sharpen all of my knives it will bring a knife back to hair shaving sharp if you use it correctly, the good thing is the sharpener is dummy proof it has guides so you don't have to worry about fucking up the angle and making your edge uneven. (Do not use the guides with Scandi grinds as the guides put on convex edges and that will just ruin the purpose of a Scandi).
Lansky Dual Grit Puck:
I use this for my hatchets and axes, it brings them back to a nice working edge to do the job, no it will not bring it back to razor sharpness but the truth is having a razor sharp axe is not the best as that means it will have a weaker edge, you want axe edges to have micro serrations these micro serrations help it bite into the wood better.
Notice: Only use the course side for a damaged edge that has chips or bad roll overs. Also when using the medium grit side do not apply too much pressure because if you do it may remove additional steel which you don't want to happen just slight pressure allowing it to bite in and then use a circular motion counting the passes and using the same passes on each side.
Tandy Leather Strop (3325-00):
I use this strop to polish and bring the edge back on my knives to razor sharpness, the Work Sharp comes with a built in strop and it will work but it is small so I prefer the Tandy strop, I also use it with my axes to remove an burrs. I loaded the strop with Enkay green stainless compound.
Apply veggie, olive or canola oil to the strop rubbing it in every once in a while, this will help maintain it keeping it from drying out also it will remove metal flakes and bring new compound to the surface, wipe it off with a rag.
With the items above you should be set to go for a long time.
Happy finger slicing.
