I am typing this from a new MacBook Pro running OSX.

That's right, for the first time in forever, I am not using Linux as my main OS.

Mac is still a *nix, so I can still do all of my normal Linux work on it. I will never move to Windows, I used it for years and it is complete shit. OSX on the other hand, I never tried.


First issues:

The first thing that I noticed was the bloated UI that is supposed to make things "simpler". I used XFCE on my laptop until now, and this is garbage in comparison. I can get stuff done much faster with XFCE.

Second is the need for an AppleID (which I refuse to get) to get Xcode and update shit.

Third is the need to reboot in order to update to a new version (came with Yosemite). In Arch, I never had to reboot, I just ran updates in the background, never needed to reboot in order to update.

Otherwise, so far so good, I've got Homebrew going, so I can live.


Any tips or questions?

I certainly agree with this. If I had a Mac, I'd do (more so not do) the very same.

What's It like In terms of overall compatibility with Linux, meaning have you experienced any significant Issues with applications/tools (binary) and the like?

I can't run any GUI tools from Linux, as OSX doesn't use the X window system. The binaries aren't compatible as OSX has a different kernel, but there is alot of tools that can be compiled (most things) or grabbed from macports (a BSD-style port system that has like 14k packages) and homebrew (another package manager).

I agree that Windows is a steaming pile of shit, but so is OSX imo. You summed it up pretty well, OSX is essentially a shitty Unix flavor.

I think I speak for a good chunk of the forum when I say that Apple, Microsoft, and Google's use of telemetry is absurd and unnecessary, and there's ways around it with the latter two, but Apple is hellbent on cloud-centering everything.

I back that the UI is garbage. Yes, it streamlines some tasks, but if you're not exactly Apple's demographic, there's bound to be plenty of things you have to click around for ages to find. All in all, Windows and OSX both blow, but as least Windows is somewhat customizable.

Also, prices and hardware. Fuck that. If I'm paying $2800 for a laptop, I expect more than what the Macbook Pro offers.
