Lock Picking? (+Story Time!) #1
Does anyone here hack doors? I'm a little surprised there's not a dedicated forum for it.

I've only picked with a hook and tension wrench I made out of a bobby pin, although it sure has taken me a long way. But soon I'm going to be getting a cheap $10 kit to try out some other tools.

Here's an interesting little story if anyone is interested:
Spoiler:
So, after I made my first pick, and was able to pick my own door, I wanted try something else. While hanging out with a friend of mine, let's call her K, we decided to break into a (empty) rental cabin. The cameras were fake and there was no one there, so it was fairly low risk. To ensure no one was in there, or there wasn't an alarm system, we cut the power to the house. (I'd imagine alarm systems can be battery powered, but if they couldn't afford real cameras, they probably didn't have an alarm.) The house was "protected" with a locked deadbolt and handle, both Kwikset locks. It took about 10 minutes on my knees, and some sore fingers, but I eventually did get in. We sweeped the area to make sure there wasn't anyone sleeping or anything. After we deemed it was clear, we turned on the WiFi, raided the fridge, bought PPV porn on their TV, and smoked weed in their hot tub. We even found a (crappy vista) laptop. It was a fun night. But the next night, K got a little cocky. She wanted to hit another cabin.

Part 2:
Spoiler:
This time, people were staying there, but they were gone. I knocked on the door to see if anyone was there, no response. The lock wasn't a shitty Kwikset, and even had a numpad for the key box. I tried picking it, and I actually got pretty close, but it was too difficult. I told her that we should just go home. So I'm just texting (from the WiFi i turned on at the other place) and then suddenly I hear a loud crash. Then I see her unlock the front door. She threw a fucking rock into the back window and shattered it! So I go in, and there isn't that much worth taking. We got one of those laptops that can disconnect into a tablet. The renters' clothes were packed, so looks like they were gonna leave soon. K took a six-pack out of the fridge, and we shared it down at the other cabin. We ended up smashing the bottles and stashing our gains at her house.

Part 3, Cops:
Spoiler:
So I start walking up to K's house from cabin 1, and I'm approached by a man and he says "Do you know what happened here?" I look over and see a couple cars parked at cabin 2. Looks like the renters returned. I told him "No, I was down here using the WiFi." I imagine how suspicious it is to see me emerge from behind another cabin. So I keep walking up the hill, and another dude asks me if I saw anything. I tell him the same thing and I hear him murmur something like "yeah right..." and then he tells me that the cops are gonna question me. I keep walking, calming myself so I can think straight. I get up to K's house and find her panicking and shit. After a short pep talk and some advice about lying to the police, we go wait outside to be questioned. We can see the cops investigating the cabin, and talking to the renters. Eventually, the owner even shows up. Well, first comes a cop to ask for facts, our age, etc. I kept with my story about the WiFI. K is almost having a panic attack. BUT THEN the detective comes up.

Part 4, Finale:
Spoiler:
Personally, I'm very prepared for all of his tricks. I know what to expect. The first thing he says is that he's gonna dust for prints. K, being a dumbass, literally lets him take her fingerprints. But before he even asks me, the other cop comes back. SHE FOUND ONE OF K'S WALKIE-TALKIES IN THE CABIN. At this point, I wanna facepalm so hard. I pull K aside with the excuse that we can prove we have our set. K instead wants to give everything up. I couldn't really stop her, but instead I try to get the charges dropped. While we were talking with the cops, K literally fucking collapses with anxiety. She gets a free ride to the hospital. Meanwhile, I'm told to sit while they finish doing their shit: photographs, questions, etc. Eventually I get chauffeured to my house in the back of the cruiser. I'm literally let off with an intimidating warning, and I never hear from anyone again. We also were never caught for cabin 1.

Moral of the story: I could make a list out of them. But basically, stick to your picks. Don't put the B in B&E.
Also, a lot of details were cut out of the story, like the cops finding broken beer bottles at cabin 1.
I still use cabin 1's WiFi whenever I go to K's house.

Hmmm. I always thought it was interesting but doing it as a hobby is one thing. Raiding innocent people's houses and stealing shit that you're unaware of the effects it could have on the families is straight up bullshit. But I'm sure you didn't post this for judgement on your character.

Yeah.... For the first cabin, nothing was broken. I wanted to keep it like that. My dumbass friend took it too far. But hey, at least everything turned out okay for everyone Tongue

I learn a lot through my experiences.

The stories are fun to read.
I've tried picking my desk drawer but I was unsuccessful the pins should stop at some point, but they always fall down...

Were you applying tension? By turning the lock, it pushes against a pin, holding it in place.

I've wanted to learn how to pick locks, but haven't got around to it. Maybe I should get off my ass and learn.

It's not that hard after some tutorials and an hour trying. You can even find some pick kits super cheap online, along with some YouTube videos, and you'll be a pro in no time! ^-^

Those kits you can buy are fairly easy to use. You even have more expensive kits, something that looks like a drill, you just turn on the drill like 2-3 times and it opens the door. It's 100+ USD though. At least.

Yep. I've got a tool that automatically opens quite literally nearly every door to a car. Costed me $20.

Yeah it's not that expensive. The most modern cars with smartphone as a key can even be unlocked for free using a phone with NFC.
