Linux Distro for really end low laptop ? #1
Hello People,

I need a linux distro for my following ancient laptop:

Intel Celeron M 440 @ 1.60 Mhz
Intel GMA 945GM - 128MB
Intel Wi-Fi
1 GB Ram
20GB Hard Drive

I know this laptop is crap but what you can do :Embarrassed:.
Also I have tested the the following distros: Ubuntu, Mint, PCLinuxOS, Manjaro, Crunchbang and Debian. There are also few which I can't remember.

The latest version of Ubuntu is soo damn slow on my laptop however I have tried 10.10 works flawlessly on my laptop but for some reason repositories doesn't work and returns 404 or similar errors so I can't install a shit on it.

PCLinusOS is loading like a snail and also lag sometimes when I'm using it so I don't want it I would say it's slower than Ubuntu when it's booting.

I have tried to install Manjaro but somehow it doesn't want to install, I mean it's nothing to do with architecture.

I would say that Crunchbang is ideal but I need desktop and icons on which I can click and easily move around it so yeah. Any other suggestions to Distros ? Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux doesn't come into the game as my laptop is not that old yet :troll:

Every help is appreciated.
Thanks
BroZix

Why not go with a lightweight graphical interface instead?
Debian squeeze with LXDE?

I forgot to mention that I'm also looking for new experience which usually is new distro = new experience as I can play around more and decide if it's alright.

Yeah I could but I have tried out Lubuntu which had LXDE and I don't like that environment that much. I prefer either Gnome or KDE which both are awesome.

Try checking out something with an XFCE interface like Xubuntu. That might satisfy you. It's very lightweight and just great in general in my opinion.

Are there any distros which you would recommend ? [The one which wasn't listed yet].

The biggest resource hog on a linux distro is going to be the desktop interface.

So as already mentioned - Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc - wont be all that different at the core as far as resource usage goes in my experience... what will make the difference is the interface. LXDE is the lightest, followed by XFCE, and then Gnome and KDE (Not sure which is better of those these days tbh, its been so long since ive used them).

I heard that OpenSuse works nicely on Celeron M with 512 MB or 1GB ram. I'm wondering if I would be able to run it, I done some research on it and it's approve what I have written above. Arch Linux not on that level yet as installation is fully in commandline, hmmm is Fedora a good distro ? The thing is I could use Ubuntu 10.10 which have gnome environment but the repository doesn't work and giving me simply 404 errors as well as it's outdated and the latest version is a bit slow I mean it isn't that bad but still tho I'm pretty sure I would run it fine if not that damn Unity :/

Then try it.

You seem to be asking our advice and then ignoring it. Take our advice or ignore it. But stop wasting our time.

Sounds kind of harsh but its pretty much the only answer.

Edit: instead of writing 'Stop wasting our time' mark it as solved. You can't decide for him to choose, we gave a solution in this case but its up to him to apply it.
