Linux Cluster

Me and some friends are about to embark on a journey, and that journey consists of building a Linux Cluster, and I have a few questions, and want feed back.

My grasp of a cluster; You have a head node, that hooks into slave nodes (Through a switch) and it shares work loads with the other computers? Simple as that right?

Im thinking of using Rocks Clusters to set up the Cluster...
Any one willing to help over Skype or something when we start this?
Some things we could use the cluster for after we set it up?(Give legit, good ideas please)
