I heard that taking japanese online is an utter waste of time. The people i know who know japanese fluently took a course at like a jc or something.

I would recommend keeping yourself using the language as much as possible, even when you aren't learning online. That can just include watching anime with subtitles instead of dubs. The best would be to talk to someone who speaks Japanese, although that's easier said than done if you don't know anyone who can xD
I have an audio book that teaches basic, kinda touristy phrases and key words and I find that it's actually very good for learning. There's plenty of great apps out there for your phone to learn to read the language too. I used to have a favourite on my old ipod (don't judge, I don't actually like Apple) but I haven't continued for quite a while. Finding the effort to motivate myself is a problem for me xD
