I've recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu, and I must say I'm regretting it. Probably gonna install Windows 7 back on my PC next week or so.
Here's why I'm disappointed with Ubuntu :
- When I set the brightness to my linking, Ubuntu automatically resets it to default (Maximum Brightness) whenever I restart my computer. I've tried three different fixes but non have worked so far.
- In order to Install anything, I have to either lookup whatever I need in Ubuntu software center or download the package and unpack it through Terminal which is time consuming to type in commands and so forth. Not to mention how annoying it is.
- There are no VPN launchers for Linux, I have to configure a VPN manually, which is annoying.
- There is no application included in Ubuntu for Uninstalling an application/deleting unpacked tar.gz files. You'll have to download a 3rd party application to delete/uninstall applications.
- Uninstalling / deleting unpacked tar.gz files, is a pain to do. You have to look through a gigantic list of applications and mark all the folders associated for the application you want to uninstall separately.
- Mouse controls and movements on laptops are different and at times frustrating. Your mouse cursor won't work if you have more than one finger on your mouse pad, something that Windows and Mac support.
- Using VMware on Ubuntu is a gigantic pain in the ass. It has no USB support for devices like memory sticks and mobile phones. Not only that but even when you put it to full screen mode it never perfectly fits your screen, and before you ask, I've tried configuring screen settings on both VMware and the Windows VM installation aswell.
I'm sorry but Ubuntu needs far more development ATM. It's an incomplete operating system. There's a good reason why it's free and Windows isn't. Windows is developed by far more experienced programmers who are not only more in number but are also motivated by money as compared to Ubuntu's development team who aren't, and say what you want about the "passion for programming" but money above all, is the best motivation for anything.
There are benefits for running Ubuntu, it's a good OS for people who code in Python, Pearl and C but for a person who codes in VB such as myself, Ubuntu isn't the best option especially since there isn't a proper IDE for VB.NET on Ubuntu (Qbasic comes close, but it's not good enough)
And all the people who say Ubuntu is good for Penetration Testing, I disagree with that as well since you can easily download Kali Linux that comes packed with everything you need for the task. It would be a pain to install all these tools manually. Ubuntu is far more secure than Windows, but I'm not much of a paranoid security freak. I scanned my computer everyday with both AVG and Bitdefender and for the past 2 years I've never been infected.
@Jinxed : I hope you've thought this through mate, GL with Ubuntu.

You should run the update commands, "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade"
Setup a keyboard shortcut for xkill.
Install Microsoft fonts.
Make sure your swap partition is at least 4GB.
And if you want to style your desktop install Conky and Screenfetch.
