I misspoke, as the image is too small for the color changer. However, we could go with grey/white, like below.

I'm leaning towards leaving it red, as that's the color of the icons referenced in the OP.

grey would be better.

I could do a darker grey, although I am not entirely sure which colors are best. There needs to be enough contrast to highlight which threads haven't been viewed.

If you had particular colors (i.e. #FFF) in mind, perhaps we could try those?

Honestly I liked the red color, at the moment I struggle to distinguish which thread is to be read and which already has been.
