Hello, I've seen alot of these Wireless network hacking threads, when I was 10 I succeded with this on my own network, my dad changed the password. Now we have a password with I think 38 letters, this is pretty strong.

Well well, I used Aircrack to do this, but I was just wondering, how in the world is this working?

Is it a dictionary attack, bruteforce? I know that it collects alot of packets before you start the attack. If anyone know, please tell me. This is real intresting.

LOL that's a long time for cracking a network fair play to the guy I would have given up a long time before 2 weeks!

Aircrack-ng is an 802.11 WEP and WPA/WPA2-PSK key cracking program.

Aircrack-ng can recover the WEP key once enough encrypted packets have been captured with airodump-ng. This part of the aircrack-ng suite determines the WEP key using two fundamental methods. The first method is via the PTW approach (Pyshkin, Tews, Weinmann). The default cracking method is PTW. This is done in two phases. In the first phase, aircrack-ng only uses ARP packets. If the key is not found, then it uses all the packets in the capture. Please remember that not all packets can be used for the PTW method. This Tutorial: Packets Supported for the PTW Attack page provides details. An important limitation is that the PTW attack currently can only crack 40 and 104 bit WEP keys. The main advantage of the PTW approach is that very few data packets are required to crack the WEP key. The second method is the FMS/KoreK method. The FMS/KoreK method incorporates various statistical attacks to discover the WEP key and uses these in combination with brute forcing.

It's entirely feasible for a bruteforce attack but it's a lot more time than most people would invest in such an attack so who knows he may be exaggerating slightly or maybe he has a lot of patience or really wanted free internet :Confused:

Explaining how it works it's not needed now as chmod has explained above.
But the key to crack the passcode is to have a gr8 wordlist.

You do for attack against WPA. You can also use crunch or jtr to feed words in but that's more a brute force attack.

In my opinion , Yes it's needed, otherwise you have to use crunch.
