Help with GRUB while dual-booting Kali Linux and Ubuntu #1
Hello again Sinisters,

Recently I decided to dual boot Kali linux in addition to Ubuntu on the household desktop. Ubuntu was installed first a while ago and it works fine. Yesterday I installed Kali also onto the computer and that also works.

The problem I am having is that Kali seems to have a custom GRUB configuration and, personally, I don't like it and I want to change the order so that Ubuntu comes first so the system will default boot into Ubuntu.

I tried to install GRUB customizer onto the Kali distro but you have to do a lot of stuff manually and in the end it just didn't work. (Couldn't get it to install correctly)

So does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do; whether that be make the Ubuntu GRUB default or tell/show me how to edit the Kali GRUB config?

(I would rather not screw around with the Kali GRUB config if at all possible)

-EDIT-
I thought about it and decided to uninstall Kali and I will be reinstalling it today, should I say no to overwriting the masterboot's GRUB when installing?

GRUB on any linux distro should be automatic. That being said, it should find your resolution and everything by default no problem. That also being said, you can safely (read: safely) edit GRUB configs but I recommend not directly touching them. Never operate on GRUB unless absolutely necessary (e.g. your monitor doesn't display the correct resolution).

Only time I ever needed to `update-grub` was when my display was not being detected and was instead coming out as 900xsomething-ridiculous. I had to manually go into init 3 and set the display of both monitors, it was a PITA. Now, what exactly is your reason for wanting to change GRUB?

I want to change the order of OS listing so that my family wont bitch about not knowing which OS to choose. That way if they dont touch, it will just boot into Ubuntu by default.

1. edit this file to do that, do make a backup:
/etc/default/grub

2. Use grub customizer on Ubuntu.

Well that wasn't the problem, I coudl configure Ubuntu's version of GRUB but Kali's version was showing up first. I did however figure out how to enable ppa for Kali and got Grub customizer installed and working and I did set Ubuntu to boot by default. However Grub Customizer detected custom scripts between the operating systems so I didnt want to change the order.

Problem solved!
