Hello Everyone,

I have always had tremendous respect for anyone who assumes the moniker of "white hat" - respect for people who possess skill and knowledge as many of you do, and who are daring enough to use it constructively to achieve ends that otherwise would not be achieved.

I personally possess none of the skill or knowledge that you do, nor will I ever. I am, however, someone who bravely and passionately stands up for the things I believe in. I am here to humbly ask one among you to take up my cause.

My cause is to end so-called "prize hunting" of big cats (Lions, Tigers, Leopards, Cheetahs, etc) and elephants in Africa. The urgency of this cause is illustrated by the fact that the Lion population on the African continent has plunged from around 500,000 in the 1940's to as few as 20,000 today. The statistics are nearly as dismal for elephants. Prize hunters are responsible for the bulk of the damage to the wildlife population in Africa, particularly for the damage to the Lion population.

People pay "safari" companies upwards of $45,000 so that they can shoot a lion and have it mounted on their wall at home. These people are barbaric sadists who get off on killing majestic animals that are on the brink of extinction. The companies who facilitate this slaughter are evil, and deserve to have their business destroyed.

Not taken. Pardon my total ignorance here, but what kind of reward and of what size?

The thing is, that's not the way it is.

Those companies have agreements sealed and signed with governments and so on. There is a limit to how many of each animal you can kill per year, and you can't hunt on mating and breeding periods. And this kind of tourism feeds whole villages of very poor people in Africa. You may like trophy hunting, or not, but it's not the indiscriminated way you're describing it. And there are heavy fines if you kill a cub or a female in charge of a litter of cubs, or who might be pregnant. Expensive ones, and not getting your license renewed, unless you can prove it was self-defense (it is a lioness we're talking about).

It's poachers the real problem. They're the ones who kill no matter the season, without caring about zones or set numbers and sell what they get in the black market - with no care for the autoctonal populace, either. Professional hunters often collaborate with local authorities in order to find and capture poachers, because THEY are decimating the animal population.

I'm not making this up - it just so happens that my cousin is a professional hunter himself, and so I know first-hand and some of my family have been there visiting him, and seen how it works. He is established near South Africa, an has a prize on his head set by poachers - melodramatic as it may seem, it's the truth. So, please, look at all the available information before making harsh accusations.
