Like the word "hacking", the definition is often simplified and overused. I'm not sure when the term became synonymous with refunding, but a lot of things could be considered Social Engineering if you do them well enough. Bartering/haggling, interviewing for jobs, picking up women...

I think refunding is just the top of the iceberg, The visible part.
- Refunding is a win-win game (for clients and refunders) = less scams compare to other services.
- Refunding is pretty secure and can be easily tried by a casu with few risks ...
- Common methods are still working since many years so "old timers" are sharing their knowledges more easily.
- And the most important part:
people will virtually scam some worldwide biggest companies... No empathy for Amzn or Nike.
So refunding has a good aura and ppl are not scared to talk about it, even on the visible net. π
Other forms are just more secret. For me, that was funny to discover SEing. I haven't named it before but I have done SEing all my life

If people find free stuff like that they keep it or sell it. eg easy lawsuit style methods shit like that, they just keep it and sell it or do it themselves a few times
