Hacking Mac Password in Single User Mode, and How to Prevent It. #1
Hi everyone, today I am going to show you how to change an admin password on a Mac in Single User Mode and how to prevent it. You will need physical access to the Mac. I believe that this only works for OSX Lion and later, but I'm not sure about Mavericks.

How to access single user mode:

1 Shut down you mac completely
2 Turn it back on
3 When screen turns white, press and hold Command + S until screen turns black and code starts coming up.

Now once you've entered Single User Mode and root# comes up, enter the following code:

1 fsck -fy

This is a systems check. This is not necessary for this tutorial but it's always good to check your macbook for any problems regularly.

2 mount -uw /

This tells the mac to mount the filesystem which then allows you to make changes to it.

3 launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist

4 Ls Users /

This shows you the usernames on the system if you don't know already. Find the username you want to change password and then type

5 passwd username

For username, enter the user name in the system ( one of the usernames shown above from Ls Users / command)

It should come up with something that tells you to type in the new password and retype just in case.

Once this is done, you can restart your Mac by typing the command: reboot

Now how to prevent someone from access Single User Mode and changing your password. One way to do this is to add a Firmware Password to your mac. Doing this will not only help secure your mac, but also disable Single User Mode so no one can just easily get in. In order to turn on your Firmware Password you must go into Recovery Mode on your mac.

How to access Recovery Mode on Mac:

1 Restart you Mac.
2 Press and Hold Command + R until you see something spinning indicating that it's loading.

You should find Firmware Password under the Utilities section near the top left corner of your screen.
Once you enable your Firmware Password, Single User Mode is disabled, and your mac is more secure.

Thanks for reading, I hope that this comes helpful to some people.
