Google interview questions #1
Hello all for anyone who isn't aware there is a lot of discussion about the questions asked by Google during an interview, for some there is no right or wrong answer rather they look at how creatively you answer them. I found a list online of some of the questions being used and thought it would be fun to see how you guys would answer them.
  • How many golf balls can you fit in a schoolbus

  • How much should you charge to wash all the windows in Seattle

  • In a country in which people only want boys, every family continues to have children until they have a boy. If they have a girl, they have another child. If they have a boy, they stop. What is the proportion of boys to girls in the country?

  • Design an evacuation plan for San Francisco

  • Why are manhole covers round?

  • How many piano tuners are there in the entire world?

  • How many times a day does a clock’s hands overlap?

  • Explain the significance of "dead beef"

  • A man pushed his car to a hotel and lost his fortune. What happened?

  • You need to check that your friend, Bob, has your correct phone number, but you cannot ask him directly. You must write the question on a card which and give it to Eve who will take the card to Bob and return the answer to you. What must you write on the card, besides the question, to ensure Bob can encode the message so that Eve cannot read your phone number?

  • You're the captain of a pirate ship and your crew gets to vote on how the gold is divided up. If fewer than half of the pirates agree with you, you die. How do you recommend apportioning the gold in such a way that you get a good share of the booty, but still survive?

  • You have eight balls all of the same size 7 of them weigh the same, and one of them weighs slightly more. How can you find the ball that is heavier by using a balance and only two weighings?

  • You are given 2 eggs You have access to a 100-story building. Eggs can be very hard or very fragile means it may break if dropped from the first floor or may not even break if dropped from 100th floor. Both eggs are identical. You need to figure out the highest floor of a 100-story building an egg can be dropped without breaking. The question is how many drops you need to make. You are allowed to break 2 eggs in the process.

  • Explain a database in three sentences to your eight-year-old nephew.

  • You are shrunk to the height of a nickel and your mass is proportionally reduced so as to maintain your original density. You are then thrown into an empty glass blender. The blades will start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?

"how much should you charge to wash all the windows in Seattle" ... my answer was ($20 an hour!) lol

Interested to know what you think of:

These are fun questions, I sometimes have to do a job interview to 'hire' new people for the company.
I might ask some of these, lets see how they answer.

Seems fun Smile

1. It depends. I can fit more if it's not expected to move afterwards - that way I can use the passenger and the engine's space, too.

2. I'll charge the owner of each window individually. Will probably make much more money that way.

3. Three to four? (Three girls to four boys)

4. Never been to San Francisco, no luck with that one.

5. No space wasted on the corners?

6. No clue. Honestly.

7. 22 times?

8. I wasn't aware there was such a thing as an alive beef 0_o

9. Was playing Monopoly and went bankrupt.

10. I just write "phone me". If my phone sounds, he has my correct number. If it doesn't, he hasn't. I have to check, nothing else Wink

11. I get twice what a regular member of the crew does.

12. I weigh 3 vs 3.
If they weigh the same, the odd one is one of the 2 I left out. I weigh one against the other, the one that weighs the most is the one I am seeking.
If the weigh differently, I get the three that weigh the most and choose 2 at random. If they weigh the same, the one I left out this time is the one I am seeking. If not, the one that weighs the most it is.

13. Throw one from the first floor.
If breaks -> Very weak, test the other.
If not breaks -> go to floor 100th and test it.
Very hard eggs may not break if thrown from floor 100th. No data about middle floors is given, thus is irrelevant.
That would be a maximum of 3-4 throws.

14. 'Tis like a cupboard. In order to have everything organised, you put the socks in a drawer, the scarves in another... However, everything is related: you wear the brown trousers with the brown socks, never with the bright pink ones.

15. Thankfully, I am small enough to place myself out of reach (and there's a lot of space, it is empty!)

You did quite well on some of them however some where incorrect, in the spirit of letting others have a go I would be happy to discuss these with you via a PM if you so desire.
