It check's gamertags if its Available or not.. For xbox360. :hehe!:

I believe it just checks to see if a XBL Gamertag exists?
Might give some info on the user if it does, as well. I haven't used it because there are a number of sites that do the same. Some people might prefer to have it on their PC at the ready, though.

Is this checking for a 404 of a username? It's the only method I've seen used so far.

I've seen people talk of their own private methods of checking but the only way I've seen is checking through 404.

There are a few APIs that can be used as well. Of course some people do prefer to make their own resources. I personally think it's better to use an existing resource unless you can't get exactly what you want from them. Saves time and energy.
