I bought two xbox elite 2 controllers from GameStop in-store, they cut open the tape and stuck a separate GameStop tape on top of the old one. I successfully opened it, replaced the controllers and sealed it back (no clear glue necessary, tape stuck back on its own). I went on a Saturday night and waited until a queue formed at the cashier and went to give back the items. The cashier even examined the tape closely but did not notice anything, and refunded me without any further questions.

The only downside is they only refund with GameStop gift cards.
