A Brierley Hill and Black Country Now And Then History Group was banned by Facebook recently. They were discussing the above dish.

Code:
Faggots and peas is a traditional dish served in a part of the West Midlands that includes Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Dudley. "Our systems clearly made a mistake here," a Facebook spokesperson said, accepting a homophobic slur was not the intention. The group was set up by Linda Beech and for years has shared stories and recipes from the area, with more than 13,000 members. She said she received a message on Tuesday night to say the group had violated Facebook's community standards 16 times. 'Correct context' "I looked to see what the problem was and it came up that members were using the word but they were using it in the correct context, as our traditional Black Country meal, as opposed to the other meaning," she said. Shortly afterwards, the number of violations had increased to 34 as further uses of the word were detected as far back as 2016. "I've had an interesting week," Ms Beech said. "And sleepless nights as well."

This is not the only time Facebook accidentally censored a bit of British culture. They also flagged and removed posts related to a place known as Plymouth Hoe, affecting a group of 26,000 members, some of which found they were banned from posting on that group.

That dish Is mouth-watering.

To avoid further bans that're well and truly compliant with their terms, Facebook should seriously reconfigure their keyword filtering to differentiate false positives from the real deal. I'm sure their techs are capable of applying such a simple configuration.

I suspect they have to do this relatively frequently, especially considering all the regional terms. XD

Precisely.

Perhaps they don't have the manpower, but from a user's standpoint, It's not acceptable.

I think you're right. They obviously don't have the capacity to either alter their auto-detection properly, or they don't the man-hours working on it thoroughly.

Basic bots/automation can't check for contexts or anomalies. Certain words will probably always be filtered. When companies use such means to prevent abuse, they should also be accountable for when they overstep.

I certainly agree.

It's hard to fathom how a company on that scale, do not have strategic planning to properly manage and maintain their Infrastructure.

I could have understood this issue in their early days... but they've had years... And this kind of issue isn't exactly new. Time for change!

Yes, I remember when Facebook had 100,000 registered users.

It would've been understandable back then, but not where they stand today.

Hopefully this truly was a misunderstanding. For now, buts aren't able to fully comprehend the context behind words such as these, so that makes moderation a bit difficult.

Similar things happen in linguistics. Words such as the Mandarin word '那个' (pronounced nei ge) could be heard as, well, 'the N word' in English. Even though the word only means 'that one', people who aren't familiar with Mandarin might not fully know what the word means.
