When i use the command - ' ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.90 netmask 255.255.255.0 up'
to try and make my ip static, I'm losing connection to the internet i'll show you a read out from ifconfig before and after the command.

BEFORE === ifconfig wlan0

(Not sure why Bcast:192.168.1.255, because my router is 192.168.1.254, but there is much i'm not familiar with0

You can edit the /etc/network/interfaces file.

vim /etc/network/interfaces

Find the line with the interface you would like to change in my case auto eth0. (You can also do it to your wireless interfaces.) Normally without any changes it will will set to get its IP automatically from DHCP and look like this:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Now to change it so it grabs a static IP from the gateway:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.118
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

Save the file and exit. Now just put the interface down then up to “refresh it” Make sure to use ifdown/up eth0 and not ifconfig eth0 down/up..... Not sure why ifconfig eth0 up/down commands dont work though :S:

ifdown eth0
ifup eth0



You can also do it from the WICD GUI

Hey Thanks .LIT, Thats Sorted it m8. I never even thought about using WICD GUI ...lol..! Always expecting anything to do with linux will be from command line....!
