Not sure about the writeup but this is something that has circulated in more or less the same form for years.

Agree, hence my question.

It's nothing new.

I did actually hear about one of the replica manufacturers in China using this method to obtain the "boost" material found in Adidas Ultraboost shoes by removing the boost material for use on their reps and return with "boost" made from crumbling Styrofoam. So if anyone is interested in making reps that's one way to do it...I guess.
