In my opinion it mostly slows your system down. If you know what you are doing, you don't need one. Different story for, let's say, your (grand)parents or if you feel the need to open each and every .exe file or click on every link. If you can't provide basic (and I mean basic) level of security for yourself, then go for it. Otherwise: don't.
