Integrated Discord? #1
I know I went years never getting Discord primarily thinking it was for gamers and just unnecessary new age tech. Now I see its benefits for forums and I've come to appreciate what a lot of forums have done with integrating Discord with the forums. How is it done? I've seen it done somewhat differently on various sites but the idea is Discord is verified and linked to your username. It may very well help with scamming prevention, marketplace deals and just overall communication. I know @Oni has his own simple way of verifying a user before they join the forum's discord server but a lot of the communication between members is not done through that. There might be a thread about this already, sorry if it's a duplicate.

Generally with our forum, I figured this went without saying. However, recent discussion has led me to believe otherwise. People are encouraged to read and follow our rules, especially those regarding illegal content. You have been warned - @Oni

It's recomended to use the forum's PM system to make deals and transactions.
In the case of a scam, staff can go trough your messages and verify your claims, in the case of discord, the staff does not have access to personal messages and cannot verify the transaction ever happened.

There's 3 really big issues with this and I'm sure anyone that "integrates" will face them:
  • I am not able to audit private messages and I cannot verify what's said between two people. Messages can be edited/deleted, I have limited administrative ability.
  • People want to use Discord to discuss and do things that Discord TOS actually prohibits. They've shut our server down in the past due to the actions of members.
  • They're a shitty company and I'd prefer to encourage privacy/anonymity when possible. They keep logs and I don't want to be involved.

Interestingly enough all these forums that integrate still require you to use the site to make deals and transactions. For example I just made 1 and the transaction was verified on the site but the rest of the discussion was done on Discord. It's really just to verify you're speaking to the person and not going back and forth via a PM system.

Discord would ban for an interaction done outside of the forum server because they're verified through that? That's actually pretty pathetic. I reported a guy who kept sending me videos of people actually dying unprovoked, Discord did shit all. And for a deal, I would still 100% keep the current rules, that the transaction and some level of description of deal taking place still be confirmed via this site so there's record here.

I don't want to encourage people to use Discord any more than I already do. If people decide to use Discord despite the risks I've mentioned, then that's their decision. However, the best thing someone can do is request confirmation via PMs for each step of the deal. As for Discord shutting down servers, yes it happens. We were actually a partnered server in the early days.

I'd like to bump this for that last sentence. I wish more people would do that, but often people make deals before they see these recommendations.

As for discord integration, I'd find it very difficult to want to integrate with a company that quite literally screwed us, then refused to talk to us. Maybe if the platform was different, we'd consider it, but it's not a nice company to be involved with. However, everyone uses it, and you can't deny it's not a nice platform to use.
