Try Xubuntu 16.04 instead of Debian. Debian is great for servers but not that good for Desktop use. Simple things that usually work out of the box like Wifi may/ may not work on Debian. You might have to compile the wifi driver into the kernel which is another pain in the ass making it counter productive since you will waste your time fighting with the OS.

Or try linux mint xfce, cool as hell
