Body modification prejudice - hatecrime? #1
I just read this vice article and found it insightful and interesting.
Personally, I think that biohacking and more drastic body mods like horn implants are going to go through the same growing pains as being gay/bi/queer/trans/whatever, and that laws should be implemented to try and minimize the damage.
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

Precisely this.

I have nothing against anyone Is any way, shape or form If they're covered In piercings, tattoos or any other body modifications. It's their choice, their body. Provided they have no direct or Indirect negative Impact on me, "each to their own". What's the difference If I got a "haircut" that someone doesn't like or approve? Nothing- the disapproval Is there but that's not frowned upon.

Hate crimes are usually directed against a group of people who cannot help but stand out in society, usually because of a differing appearance to the average citizen. Now if you start fucking around with the way you look to the degree you are putting horns in your head then you are going to stand out, and it will be your own fault.

How does being LGBT-whatever or Jewish/Islamic/Muslim make people stand out?

It's only a matter of time before people start hacking off their limbs for superior cybernetic replacements.

Arabs and Jews have distinctive features which whether or not they are religious, leads to them clearly being labelled as such. An Arabic man is clearly Arabic. Jews can sometimes be mistaken for a "gentile" but this is not always the case. In this way facial feature are clear pointers.

In terms of the LGBT community when two men walk together holding hands they stand out, or when a gay man wears more feminine clothing he stands out or acts in a more stereo-typically gay manner he stands out. Ill concede that it is not as clear with gays as with a race of peoples but there are definite signs that a random raging homophobe in the street can pick up on none the less.

I don't think this guy should've gotten the crap kicked out of him because he looks weird, but looking weird is a choice he made. People can't really decide to be black or white or gay or Arabic or Jewish or whatever, but they do have a choice in whether or not they want to modify their bodies like this, which is why I don't think this can be called a hate crime and why I don't think there should be special laws in place to protect people who do this to themselves.

Exactly my thoughts. People like what they like. If you're not negatively impacted (besides by your own thoughts) then you kind of need to back off, because shit changes.

If it doesn't change you, then you don't need to worry about it. Case closed.

Yeah sign me up. I'd be down for cybernetic limbs.
