I've been playing games for 25+ years, but if I had to narrow it down to five things:
  • Improved Transistor Density - Better CPUs/GPUs and better manufacturing. Moore's Law.
  • Improved 3D/Design Techniques - Better hardware and better models/textures. Modern applications.
  • Improved Motion/Sound Capture - Better equipment allows for more realistic sound/music. Motion capture enables realistic movements.
  • Improved Game Engines - Better frameworks for developers to build their games. Unreal, Unity, etc.
  • Improved Internet - The capabilities of dial-up versus gigabit internet are pretty clear.

I think for me personally, just based on MY own experience as a gamer;

1. Graphics, I started playing on the PS1 so I was used to everything being block shapes that resembled real things.
2. Storage. It's insane just how much storage they have now, and it's annoying that companies knowingly put lower amounts of storage than they really are capable of.
3. Monitors. I don't know if this counts, but monitors are literally insane now.
