I would prefer filing PR for more expensive items

Either file it or what also is working is that you find a "PR"-statement where it says that they didn't find anything and then photoshop it for your case.
I heard that this works good with amazon but could also be risky... im not 100% sure

Just return the item. BB reps lie through their teeth with these things. You'll likely end up having to do a chargeback even after the police report.
