to each their own, but i dont feel there is really a "best" language..
My reccomendation is that you learn a little of everything, and a lot of low level stuff.. you should know at least how to do some slightly complicated tasks in
Java
C++ (properly, no iterators, streams, etc, but do know how they work)
C# (just enough to understand the concepts, it will help you a lot with java)
Perl
and a lot about:
C
Linux shell scripting
and touch on:
ARM assembly (if you dare)
x86 assembly (its really simple)
and if you are feeling for a challange try VAX assembly
aside from that know a little bit of web scripting, just enough to know what youre doing though.. php and html you should know.
personally, I hate java..it seems so useless to have code compiled to bytecode, then interpreted in a virtual machine...I would much rather have it optimized (im a diehard assembly programmer who really really likes C [ANSI])
"saying that java is good because it works on all platforms is like saying anal sex is good because it works on all genders"

Although I don't personally program, I'd say C, C#, or C++. As they're some of the industry standards.

C and Java for sure. Hope you find what you are looking for.

C# is not an "industry" standard..its just a language, like C and C++.. the only STANDARD is humans, nothing else is constant in the industry.
As far as usage goes...here is what i see to be the list (descending order)
Java (sadly)
C/C++
Objective C
no point going farther

When I say 'industry standard'. I mean, go and get a software engineer job without knowledge of C/C++. It'll be highly unlikely and very difficult.

Why is everyone hating on Java here?

Actually, as you can see from the post I quoted above, the "industry standard" would be Java.
However, as Java and the C's are quite similar in syntax, you will likely know, if not have to know one of the C's if you know Java.

The thing being most machines have the C library already installed. Whereas Java isn't.

I would argue that most machines have java installed - around 84%, as this article states.
According to this article the most popular language is actually python. However, this article takes into count tests, which we can assume make up a huge percentage of the python usage.
This eWeek study places Java as the number one language for job seekers.
