Autistic Programmers: What helps you? 06-17-2022, 04:30 AM
#1
As an autistic teen, who specifically struggles with numbers and logical processing, software development has never came easily to me and I constantly finding myself forgetting things I have learned and falling into deep depressions and pits over the subject.
To any autistic developers (or neurotypical, I don't want to divide) what helps you when retaining programming concepts and mastering the logic behind it?

I'm not autistic so I wouldn't know, and I certainly wouldn't parade it as a badge of honor. Its like putting a kid with down syndrome in a clowns outfit. Depressing, and fucking hilarious.

Who is wearing it like a badge of honor? I have an issue that disrupts my life, I'm asking for advice. Where is the parading? Some predispositions on your part - more likely.

I'm not autistic, but I can recommend a few tips.
1. Stick to one language. I see a lot of people who bounce around while learning.
2. Don't over work yourself. Do about 2-4 hours of learning, then play around with what you learned. Make a command line game or something.
3. Don't be afraid to take notes. You will struggle at some point. I personally remember struggling when learning WINAPI in C++.
4. Don't go too big too soon. You won't be a god in a week. But steady practice will get you there.

Hi there, thank you for your concise yet fruitful reply. I definitely see what you mean, talking about people bouncing around a lot, because that's me. I'm under 20, though since 11 I've gone from Python, to Ruby, C++ and Java, web design to software development. Granted, in between these I've taken tangents into Chemistry and Pharmacology and various other subjects as per hyperfixation. This is a personal issue, I know, but it really does seem my issue is that I lack the discipline to force myself to settle on one topic for a prolonged period of time. The advantage to this is that I actually have a basic understanding of a lot of languages (and the other unrelated topics) but this in of itself is a double edged sword. Jack of all trades, master of none.
I am rambling at this point. Again, thank you for your reply, I'll take it all into account and see what I can do with myself. Have a blessed day <3

This is something I can definitely see helping, another situation of having the self discipline to do it when I need to. Thank you for your support <3
