I have some photos and the serial id of an Asus Ac3100 (more or less 300$) do you think that it can be used to get a refund in some way?
Could I write to Asus and say that it is broken, and then get a refund or a new one shipped to my address?

You will more than likely need a reason as to why you cant ship the 'defective' item back they wont just ship you a replacement as they will wont to diagnose whats wrong with it.
