Greetings,

I was looking for a set of operating systems that I could efficiently use for pentesting/hacking.
Upon looking up on the internet , I found kinda an expected response , Backtrack/Kali DIstro.

I went to its homepage and studied it a bit and it looked appealing , just as was expected from it.

However , many of the users also said that I should use Arch Linux for it , as usual I went to its website and found out that
its a decent distro which is highly customizable , I saw its packages and all and they were the same tools which were pre-installed in Kali.
The point here is , that almost all available linux distros are able to be customized to that degree,
and if that is the case , why does Arch Linux Stands out?

And if you can customize all distros and make them hacking OS'es ,
What was the need of releasing OS'es like Kali/Backtrack?

It's more for convenience than anything else, with most distros the user would have to source the software and download and install it. Pen testing distributions do all this for you meaning you can boot it up and start working straight away.

Personally I find Arch a waste of time. Kali is pretty much some tools on a full Debian distro.
Kali was pretty buggy first time round and has somewhat improved.

Pentoo is another fantastic pentest distro based on Gentoo (I find to be a lot faster)

But lets face it, you aren't going to use ALL the tools in Kali, so why not just install them as you go.

This way you're learning how packages are managed within the distribution.

I will never recommend Arch for a beginner user because it require much effort for it's initial start because you'll have to customize it yourself whereas Kali is just Install and Use, You should notice that they are made for different purpose, What I mean is Arch is made for normal usage while Kali is made for Pentesting and it's not recommended to be used for primary use unless you acquire he full knowledge of handling Linux.

Arch != pentest distro, also by nature kali is flabby having multiple tools that do practically the same thing.

To give you third option: OpenSuse! I'm using it as my main OS and I installed some pentesting apps (Metasploit + DB connection + some other stuff for WiFi pentesting (aircrack etc.)) and it works sweet
