Android Manufacturers Lie To Customers About Updates #1
Greetings to all,

Those who believe In Installing security updates for their Android device, hence have the very latest patches Installed, think again. It appears that some of latest updates are skipped entirely- even though the device claims to be up-to-date.

Coincidently, prior to stumbling across this article, my Android cell phone prompted for the latest updates of which (as per usual), I neglected to Install.

Quote:Your Android phone may not be as secure as you think it is. According to a recent report from German security firm Security Research Labs, which was first picked up by Wired, not only do many Android manufacturers not always keep up to date with Android security updates, but they actually lie to customers by telling them that their device has the latest patch installed.

The researchers — Karsten Nohl and Jakob Lell — spent two years analyzing Android devices and checking their code to see if the manufacturers had actually installed the updates, or if they were instead simply claiming that they were up to date. What they found was that many devices had what they called a “patch gap,” where the phone’s software claimed the phones were up to date, but the code proved that often dozens of patches had simply been skipped.

That's not right at all.

I've yet to disable updates and I keep getting reminders every few weeks or so.

This isn't anything new, we've known that they skip and slow updates for years now. Not really lying, as latest update installed' means latest available, which would be from the manufacturer. It can take some work to port each update, although it's easier for the company to do than the community.

To solve this problem, stop using manufacturer versions, and install the latest stock Android version for your device. Stop relying on manufacturers, because they're clearly not worthy of our trust.

This.

In all my years of computing, I've never been dependent on updates from a given manufacturer/corporation. I'm well aware of how to secure my systems, and stay very much Informed on the latest threats and vulnerabilities each and every day.

As any rational person would.
My statement was more directed at people in general (assuming you didn't know judging by response, or maybe I'm misinterpreting, it's hard to get messages across via text), but oh well.

I realize that.

I simply provided my stance on the matter.
