Intel absolutely insist on collecting the box and I've heard stories of delivery drivers checking the box upon Collection. I didn't want to risk it so stuck to my initial resale.

Atleast you got a free CPU.
Which CPU did you get, if I may ask.

I actually resold it. It was a 6600k

How come you didn't go for a 8700k or 8086k if you were going to refund?

I didn't have the raw cash and the account I was using was practically a fresh one.

They actually asked for the box back? I thought they just sent you a new one and it's a done deal.

In what capacity do the drivers check the package?

It wouldn't go beyond an external physical Inspection.

I spoke with others who've tried and apparently intel instructs the driver to open the box and ensure the product is within it. It wasn't a risk I wanted to take.

That's a bit extreme. The driver's responsibility Is to deliver the goods, not Inspect It's contents.

If the box Is factory-sealed (as with laptops that advise to return It If It's tampered with), the same can be done In this case.

The excuse I used with intel was that it didn't work and I had tried it on another device. They wanted the full CPU back and they refused any attempt to allow me to mail it to them.

Take an authoritative role, and be In control right from the get-go.

Tell them (at the very start of the conversation before they get a chance to suggest anything), that you've already mailed It and once they receive It, you'll look forward to their reply. Do this politely and at the same time, thank them for their customer service.

I don't believe intel give out their inbound address. At least the one I found was their US headquarters. This may also work in my favour if I act clueless.
