what would you suggest since you said to buy something first then do eb for the airpods?

The nature and value of the Item Is not Important, so purchase whatever you like.

And if I were to buy the case and then the airpods after and say eb how long after buying the case should I wait?

After the legit purchase, hit the SE a week or two later.
