Strange.
They couldn't reverse the transaction through a direct debit reversal?

Not sure where you're based - However the UK is weird.
When using a debit card you don't have full buyer protection and the bank/provider will only even think about a chargeback if it is out and out fraud. Whereas a credit card gives the full chance to enter the transaction into dispute (interestingly if the business at any point confirms you will get a refund, even casually or to just shut you up) MasterCard will always close in your favour. Another reason I now use credit cards for most of my refunds as well as cash flow

Wasn't your claim based on legit grounds?
If so, you should be covered.

So that's the difference between buyer protection and fraud protection.
Debit = Fraud = Only do something if you have been defrauded and not made the transaction/transfer yourself, e.g someone has gained access to your account. If you have a dispute they view it as a civil matter (which it is) and that if you were in the right then a company has to follow consumer laws etc.
Credit = Buyer = Allows you to open a chargeback on any grounds you want (providing the bank/provider deems it so, I've had a bank tell me I would lose so not to waste time until I had more evidence). It's also why you should put things like holidays on credit cards. Pay it off as soon as you want so there's no interest to be incurred. It doesn't have to be outstanding on the credit card to enter a chargeback.
Essentially, big purchases or risky refunds = do it on credit card unless you can afford to lose it

I understand that.
I just wanted to clarify how It relates to the said circumstances.
