32 bit vs 64 bit ubuntu 05-14-2014, 11:13 PM

Okay, so I have tried ubuntu 64 bit on my 2gb RAM computer with intel duo core 2 1.4ghz, I find that it lags alot compared to windows, but my windows is running in 32bit. So I wass wondering if 32 bit Ubuntu would speed up the PC compared to 64 bit or there is no difference?

So, what you're saying is that you're running a 64bit OS on hardware that only supports 32bit?
Downgrade to 32bit or upgrade hardware.
(I'm assuming Windows is the default OS that came with the system)

I dont believe you can actually run a 64 bit OS on a 32 bit architecture. The processor couldnt handle the instruction size given by the OS.
As for faster - no, 32bit would be even slower as you are now sending it only half the instruction size it can handle so you are essentially doubling the number of operations that need to be performed by the CPU.
The reason it lags, imo, is because it uses a shitty Windowing system. Unity is crap. Gnome is better but still resource intensive. I prefer XFCE

In my personal experience I haven't experienced that much of a difference between the 64 & 32 bit versions of Linux. I agree with the guy above that you'll get significant improvements if you change your desktop manager to Gnome or XFCE. If I were you I'd go with Lubuntu (xfce) 64 bit so that if I upgrade the RAM the system can handle it.

I used Xubuntu 64 bit before trying out ubuntu 32 bit but all before I was on ubuntu 64bit.
I noticed that all 64bit versions of Ubuntu lag when you copy paste files to usb disk. They freeze when you use cache's to download from websites like mega.co.nz. It also consumes more RAM faster compared to 32bit.
Upside for 64bit ubuntu against 32 bit ubuntu. Ubuntu runs operations faster, sometimes too fast for the computer, that it freezes. EG: copy pasting files to sub disk at 11.10mb/sec. impossible in 32 bit.
Xubuntu has same issues as ubuntu when using 64bit. Please assist me in a way if it'spossible to use 64bit with less lags. I even reduced the swappiness.

i used 32 & 64 bit with different enviroments...first i must say 64bit is of course more hungry source than 32bit comparing the (~350mb ram usage to almost the double on 64bit) so its normal for your computer (with 2gb ram) to lag...i cant see a reason why to use 64 bit but if you still want a 64bit system use some light enviroment like LXDE,Gnome shell its also ligh with some style of course and delete apps that u dont need - use and replace some other "heavy" apps with "light" one.
About swappiness anything over 3gb is just waste of space !!!
Dont use a ton of indicators !!!
Manage your startup programms !!!
Avoid hard multitasking !!!
Hope that helps
